Whose idea was this fitness challenge, anyway?
On the plus side, XT effing rocks.

I’m using the Runtastic apps, meal logger, and a Fitbit to try and ditch the dad bod. Its great that I can do bits and pieces when the kiddos permit without heading to to gym but its still kicking my ass.

My fitness tracker is I ride until I can’t, and then push a little further the next time. I had myself nearly up to the split century mark a few years ago, doing 42 miles each way to work using that method. I will admit that having older kids (5/8) has helped me spend more time in the saddle. It wasn’t easy when they were both in diapers.

I’m a big fan of the guide rs brakes it came with, but I spec’d this bike because I’m a Shimano guy. I’ve tried several times, but I can’t stand sram shifters.

It was a good ride. Sleds have been packing it down for a few days now, so the surface is fast and grippy. I did bury the front wheel on one fast downhill left hander, but I landed in four feet of powder after clearing the handlebars. It was actually a really pleasant way to crash a mountain bike.

Yeah 2 years old and 4 months here, I can’t exactly escape the house for long with the Mrs. murdering me, unless I take one with me.

I like shifting with the thumb for both up and down, I feel it gives me a better grip on the bars.

For me, a quarter century of muscle memory is hard to overcome.

The two year old should be old enough for a helmeted bike trailer ride, and I had my kids on tagalongs at 3 1/2, and riding without training wheels at 4 1/2. The key to maintaining my my riding hobby is to do it with my kids. My daughter was starting to challenge my single track dominance last summer. I’m starting to get worried.

XT is the greatest thing ever. Mine shifts so crisp it’s absurd. And it’s been doing it with only minor adjustment for years now.

Peddle, peddle peddle. Looks like fun.

My new bike is sram GX I think. I really miss the xt from my old bike. The level of effort is just so much less and you can drop up to 3 gears at a time. Otherwise it works fine. I’m getting used to it. Don’t look at the prices of an 11 spd sram cassette, ouch.

That’s the other reason why I went 2x10 XT. The parts costs on the 1x11 are awful. I’m happy to be a generation behind for the sake of economic efficiency.

You can get a 1x11 xt drive train in the $350 range. It is an incredible value.

It is amazing how the little bit of extra drag that now adds to the mountain biking experience really adds up to a lot of extra effort over a long distance.

Aside from the descents, I spent the entire time in granny. The float of 5" tires is great on snow, but I really wasn’t prepared for the rolling resistance. Some days I miss my road bike.
